What is "Strategic Score"?
TransparentChoice helps you calculate a strategic score for each project. This is a weighted score that's calculated by scoring each project against a set of strategic criteria. The score represents how attractive a project is to your organization in terms of its ability to help achieve your overall goals. It is, in effect, a measure of strategic alignment of your projects.

Strategic score is one of the biggest inputs into project prioritization and project selection as it's an indication of how "important" each project is.

The strategic score can also be very helpful when you have resource conflicts. The score will tell which project is more important so you can allocate resources appropriately (and without political arm-twisting).

Define your score

There are two components to the calculation of your strategic score. First you need a set of weighted criteria. You define these weighted criteria through a process of brain-storming followed by weighting (using the AHP process). This is done in a survey and, in TransparentChoice, it's possible to have multiple surveys supporting multiple different stakeholder groups. Your weighted scores apply to ALL projects.

The second component of the calculation of strategic score relates to each projects individually. Essentially, you score each project against each criterion. This can be done as part of the Kanban process or it can be done as part of a survey. As before, you might run multiple surveys with different stakeholder groups.

To calculate your strategic alignment score, simply select which survey you want to use for scoring your projects and for weighting your criteria.

If you want to use this score (with this particular combination of criteria weights and project scores) in later analysis, you will need to save it. This will allow you to use your strategic score to present your portfolio to the executive team in a way that reflects the strategic goals of the organization. You may even want to save multiple different scores (e.g. you might want to save the score using the executive's weighted criteria and a score using the scores of a different stakeholder group).

You can also use this score;

  • in further calculations - for example, you can now calculate value-for-money using calculated attribute
  • within your PPM tool to capture prioritization of projects and to help drive resource allocation decisions, etc.

So let's look at how to save the score as an attribute. Simply go to the ranking chart and press the "Save scores" button.

This will open up a dialogue box asking you to choose which attribute you'd like to save the strategic score as.  You can choose an attribute that you created earlier or, if you have not created an attribute for Strategic Score, you can create an attribute on the fly. Simply give it a name (and optional description) and leave the "Type" as "Numeric". Also, leave "Input type" as "Enter value manually".

You're now ready to use your strategic scores in analytics and for resource allocation.
